The requirements placed on industrial sealing solutions are changing fast, above all through the growing weight given to sustainability. One of the greatest challenges is doing without PFAS — per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances — which have traditionally been present in many sealing materials because of their chemical resistance and longevity.
Why do without PFAS?
PFAS are synthetic chemicals that accumulate in the environment over decades and are regarded as potentially harmful to people and to nature. Numerous industries are being called upon to develop PFAS-free alternatives without giving up the performance of their products.
PFAS-free materials at VR Seals
We are working on sealing solutions without PFAS that offer the chemical resistance, the mechanical properties and the longevity our customers expect.
For many applications we offer high-performance HNBR materials — hydrogenated nitrile rubber with very good heat and chemical resistance and high mechanical strength.
A further alternative is peroxide-cured EPDM . It offers excellent resistance to ozone, weathering and high temperatures and is therefore particularly suited to harsh environments — but not in contact with mineral oils.
Low-friction coating without PFAS
To lower friction further we offer special friction-reducing coatings. These can be used in combination with EPDM or HNBR without any PFAS being involved.
