Testing of the SAB 12 28 rotary shaft seal for IP69K certification — carried out in house.
Introduction
This report presents the results of our in-house tests toward IP69K certification of SAB rotary shaft seals. The tests confirm the performance of our products under extreme conditions.

Product specification
The SAB rotary shaft seal tested is made of food-grade fluoroelastomer (FKM-19) and is designed for applications that demand extreme resistance to high temperatures, chemical attack and mechanical load. The other elastomers in our range meet the same standard.
Test conditions
IP69K certification calls for seals that withstand extreme water pressure and high temperatures. Our test ran under the following conditions:
- Water pressure: over 100 bar
- Water temperature: 80 °C
- Test duration: 30 seconds per cycle
- Test angles: 0°, 30°, 60° and 90° for full coverage
- Set-up: high-pressure nozzle mounted on a fixture that allows all four angles and maintains the specified distance of 10 to 15 cm
The protective cover
The protective cover consists of a round plate with a central bore for the shaft. The gap between shaft and bore is 0.5 mm per side. Its purpose is to prevent the water jet striking the seal directly.

Result
With protective cover: The SAB 12 28 passed the conditions of IP69K certification. The cover prevented the jet striking the sealing lip directly.
- Result: pass
- Leakage: 0 %
- Protective device: round plate, central opening, 0.5 mm gap to the shaft
Without protective cover: The seal did not withstand the direct jet.
- Result: fail
- Leakage: 100 %
Conclusion
SAB rotary shaft seals offer a reliable solution for applications with an IP69K requirement — provided they are installed with a suitable protective cover. This finding rests on testing seals of type SAB 12.28.7-193 under extreme conditions. The protective cover is decisive for compliance with the IP69K standard.
