Formula Student at Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University: how friction-optimised seals make a planetary gearbox inside a 10-inch wheel possible.

As a company committed to innovation and technical excellence, we support the Formula Student team of Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Formula Student is an international engineering competition in which students design, build and race formula-style cars. They are judged not only on speed, but also on design, efficiency and business viability.

Our contribution comprises technical advice and the supply of sealing solutions. That fits what we do — and it is an opportunity to accompany the next generation of engineers.

Optimised seals for maximum efficiency

One focus of the collaboration is the planetary gearbox, a key component of the car. It has to be light, compact and easy to maintain — and fit entirely inside a 10-inch wheel. In the endurance and efficiency category that is precisely what counts.

  • Compact design: The smaller width of the seals allows smaller, lighter housing parts — which saves weight and improves handling.
  • Longer bearing life: The narrow seals allow a greater bearing spacing, which lowers the load on the bearings.
  • Higher sliding speeds: Conventional seals limit the maximum diameter of the sealing point. VR seals tolerate higher sliding speeds and therefore permit larger diameters — which simplifies maintenance and raises system efficiency.

The lower friction not only improves overall efficiency, it minimises energy losses — a real advantage in endurance events where every watt saved counts.

We are glad to travel part of the road with them.
