When the seal stops production

A kneading machine that has failed, an agitator standing still, a leaking rotary union: the cause is often at the sealing point. We build radial shaft seals for machines that are cleaned every day — materials compliant with FDA and EC 1935, hygienic design, from a batch size of one.

The situation

A failure rarely stays on its own

What starts at a single sealing point sets off a chain in food production.

Deadlines

Unplanned downtime

Delivery dates come under threat, and the cost of downtime runs from the first minute — regardless of how small the defective part is.

Effort

Tied-up resources

Every failure ties up maintenance, shift planning and scheduling. That time is missing somewhere else.

Hygiene

A standard at risk

A leak puts the hygiene requirements in doubt — and with them product quality and your customers’ trust.

What we set against it

Five properties that matter at this sealing point

Approved materials

Tested rubbers for food contact: compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.2600 and with EC Regulation 1935/2004. Metal-detectable grades on request.

Hygienic design

Designed with no cavities and no undercuts in which product residues can lodge. The transition between metal and elastomer runs without a step and the seal is easy to clean — to EHEDG and DIN EN 1672-2.

What EHEDG actually requires

IP69K cleaning

High-pressure cleaning is routine on these machines. We tested an SAB 12 28 in house at 100 bar water pressure and 80 °C and published the test report — including the detail on which the result actually depends.

To the test report

Lower friction power

A VR seal draws about one third of the friction power of a standard shaft seal; with the Low Friction sealing lip it falls by a further 50 to 70 per cent. That means less wear, lower energy costs and longer maintenance intervals.

20 watts instead of 60 — the arithmetic

Separable and recyclable

There is no chemical bond between metal and elastomer. The materials can be separated by type and the support body can be reused. This is not an environmental measure added afterwards; it follows from the design.

Eight pledges that follow from the design

From practice

When the seal itself becomes the foreign body

A plant builder found red, yellow and black particles in his filling stations. The trail led to the rotary union.

The cause: the sealing lip had been washed out all round — what was missing was in the product.
The solution

Redesigned instead of reordered

A spare part would have repeated the problem. Instead we redesigned the sealing point:

  • V-ring solution with minimal dead space — no gap in which product can lodge
  • FKM to FDA and USP Class VI
  • media-resistant, CIP- and SIP-capable
  • temperature-resistant to 230 °C
  • food-grade FFKM on request for more aggressive media
  • metal-detectable on request

The result

Four things that changed

  • No more foreign particles in the downstream filters
  • Longer service life
  • Less maintenance effort
  • Lower energy consumption

The customer prefers not to be named. If you have a comparable problem with a rotary union, send us the installation situation — we will take a look.

Where they are used

Where our seals sit in food production

  • Kneading machines and mixers
  • Agitators
  • Conveyor belts and screw conveyors
  • Filling and packaging lines
  • Rotary joints and rotary unions
  • Centrifuges and separators
  • Drying plants
  • Pumps

From advice to series production

We are a manufactory. That means there is no minimum order quantity standing in the way of a design, and no catalogue for us to hide behind.

Step 1

Understand the sealing point

Medium, pressure, diameter, speed, temperature — plus the cleaning process and the approvals required. Five pieces of information are enough for a first answer on feasibility.

Step 2

Make a sample

Toolmaking and production are in house in Übach-Palenberg. That is why, from a batch size of one, we can do what elsewhere needs a minimum quantity.

Step 3

Into series production

If the sample holds, it goes into regular supply — in the same tools, with the same tests.
